Hello and thank you for stopping by my page. The purpose of this page is to bring to light certain aspects of ASMBS that I believe to be true. Everything on this page is of my own personal opinion and may differ from yours.
MY ASMBS WORK HISTORY
In late 2009, I was hired by ASMBS as their System Administrator. Replacing another person who was let go for reasons unknown to me. I was warned just after arriving of ASMBS's track record when it came to IT. They did not keep anyone long. However, as most would, I believed my work performance and dedication to ASMBS would over rule that scenario. Wow I could not have been more wrong.
While working with ASMBS, I developed websites for their Annual Meetings. These sites also had online registration for their Annual Meeting, even registering a record number of attendees in their entire history in 2010 thereby increasing their revenue. I began moving their registration for their annual meetings away from a pay service, saving ASMBS thousands of dollars. I set up an "Electronic Ballot" system which allowed members to vote online while still filling the requirements mandated by their bylaws. The current President of ASMBS, Dr. Robin Blackstone, stated, " This was the most professional ballot system we have ever had."
WRONGFUL TERMINATION
On October 6, 2011, my boss came into my office seemingly under much duress. She stated that she had to terminate my employment. I, as most would, asked her "What is the reason I am being let go?" She at that time stated that it was "Just the direction ASMBS has chosen to go." She said that it was not my work or work ethic. To me this made absolutely no sense. However, I simply packed my belongings and left.
I then went ahead and put in my unemployment claim. After being told I did nothing wrong personally by my boss, ASMBS, attempted to report to the state that I was "Fired for substandard performance." Completely contradicting themselves. I am not sure if that was some sort of attempt to relieve themselves of their unemployment responsibilities.
Given ASMBS's track record, I give the same warning to their current "Technology Specialists". If their track record is indicative of the future, keep yourself a plan B. Your time is limited. Their termination of my position has placed me in dire straights and undue duress as it will you.
EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITIES TO THEIR EMPLOYEES
We live in a time of severe economic hardship within the United States. Terminating an employees employment should not be for a reason such as "It is the direction we decided to go". Employers have a certain ethical responsibility to ensure employees a sense of job security so that they are not constantly under duress they are about to lose their jobs. This exact thing demonstrates what is wrong with our system today. The state of Florida is different from many other states in the fact that you can legally terminate someone's employment with or without cause which ASMBS surely took advantage of.
Employers should do everything in their power to make their employees feel secure in their positions by ensuring they are not terminated for no reason or no cause. Terminating someone in the current economic condition effects more than just the employee but puts their entire family under duress causing severe anguish as they watch everything they worked for get taken away. ASMBS violated this ethic. Even though it is just ethic and not law.
WHAT DO I REQUEST?
I believe that Healthcare Professionals are just that "Professionals". I believe the majority of Americans feel the same way as I do, that you should be able to be secure in your job as long as you are performing your duties. I would request that Surgeons, Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists and other Professionals in the Bariatric fields who believe the same way, find other means of fulfilling your CME and CEU needs other than ASMBS's events. There are other professional groups and organizations who can provide quality, if not better, continuing education resources for you. In my personal opinion, ASMBS is an organization who has shown a severe lack of professionalism and lack of concern for their employees. I do not believe they deserve your financial support.
